About the project: This project took place in autumn 2024 initiated by Sally Wren Stevens of SOL Forest school at Tijeras, surrounded by the Manzano Mountains in New Mexico. The First (mini) Children’s Forest in the USA!
Having set up and run forest school for many years, when Sally heard about the Children’s Forest, she was deeply inspired and traveled to England to train as a facilitator in order to carry this project to her land and people.
Sally was drawn to the Children’s Forest for their shared mission of connecting children to the natural world and the desire to grow a greener, healthier world through planting trees and growing micro-forests with children, families, and schools. The vision is of people taking care of the land and each other as we re-plant some of the once vast forests that thrived on this land.
SOL aims to get more children in the woods through planting trees with children, creating green woodland-pockets across the Southwestern landscape. These dual missions will allow several more children to experience Soulful Outdoor Learning in forests and woodlands while also growing their stewardship through tree planting projects.
